How to Budget for Moving to a New City in Kenya

Everyone budgets for the rent. Almost nobody budgets for everything else, and that's how a move from Nairobi to Mombasa, or Eldoret to Kisumu, quietly turns into a small financial crisis in week one. The rent is the number you see; the real cost of relocating is a stack of one-off charges hiding just behind it.

The upfront pile nobody warns you about

Start with the move itself: a moving company can run anywhere from KES 5,000 for a small local job to KES 80,000 for a long haul with a lot of furniture. Then the landlord's stack lands all at once, a security deposit of one to two months' rent, the first month's rent up front, and sometimes an agent's finder fee of up to a month's rent (this one is often negotiable, so push). After that come the setup charges that ambush the unprepared: a KPLC deposit of KES 5,000 to 15,000 if you're on a new meter, a water connection of KES 3,000 to 10,000 depending on the county, internet installation of up to KES 5,000 (frequently waived on a 12-month contract), and KES 1,500 to 3,000 for new locks, which you should always change in a new place, no exceptions.

What it really adds up to

Put it together and the picture sharpens fast. On a KES 20,000-a-month apartment, expect to need somewhere between KES 60,000 and 100,000 in hand before you've unpacked a single box, deposit, first month, moving and setup combined. The practical lesson: start saving for a move two to three months before the date, not two weeks.

The part that can save you thousands: pick the right city

Where you land changes the monthly maths dramatically. A Nairobi one-bed at KES 20,000 to 40,000 sits inside a KES 50,000 to 90,000 cost of living. Mombasa eases that to KES 12,000 to 25,000 rent and KES 35,000 to 60,000 all-in. Kisumu drops again to KES 8,000 to 18,000 and KES 25,000 to 45,000, Nakuru to KES 8,000 to 15,000 and KES 22,000 to 40,000, and Eldoret is the gentlest of all at KES 6,000 to 15,000 rent inside a KES 20,000 to 35,000 monthly life. The same salary simply stretches much further the moment you leave the capital.

Plan the move properly and it's an adventure, not an ambush. Search your destination city on Makao Match first, so you know exactly what's waiting before you commit.
